Amblyopia is a disease in which one or two eyes or less commonly two are affected by visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and accommodation ability. The condition is also classified by another name-" lazy eye». We will tell you what kind of disease it is, what symptoms it has, whether amblyopia can be cured.
Amblyopia of the eye: symptoms, how to treat
Lazy eye syndrome is characterized by a reduced level of one eye activity which causes processes of vision. This can be absolutely inactive at times. Approximately 2 per cent of the population globally has a similar condition, adolescents more frequently. Amblyopia also affects other visually disabled individuals. The likelihood of developing a lazy eye increases particularly with strabism, astigmatism, cataracts.
Types of Amblyopia
In total, several types of eye disease are classified. There is primary amblyopia, it is also congenital. It is not so common. The secondary form, which is divided into several types, is much more often manifested. Despite the relatively large number of varieties, the symptoms are about the same. Amblyopia happens:
- Clear rays do not fall on the retina of the damaged eye, vision does not develop, focusing is poor. Violation occurs with astigmatism, myopia, hyperopia;
- It develops with strabismus. Different pictures are displayed in the right and left eye, and the brain is not able to connect them. Because of this, the "weak" eye is suppressed, and the brain ceases to perceive signals as much as possible. But vision rarely disappears completely;
- It occurs with cataracts. The rays stop coming to the retina, because of this vision suffers;
- With this type of amblyopia, psychogenic blindness occurs. A person completely ceases to see at the moment of hysteria attacks.
The most common form of amblyopia is dysbinocular, occurring because of strabism. When an organ deviates from its natural role, it appears a distorted image, and the eyes see worse. There's the opposite case, though: strabismus evolves because of amblyopia. In any case you should see a doctor and continue treatment for vision problems. The faster this is achieved, the greater the possibility of fully restoring vision or stopping pathology growth.
Symptoms of amblyopia: how does the lazy eye syndrome manifest
The lazy eye often has a visual manifestation, but in the initial stages there may be no symptoms at all. A regular visit to ophthalmologists will allow you to identify problems in a timely manner, if any. There are a number of signs by which the presence of pathology can be determined. Symptoms of amblyopia are as follows:
- Significant visual impairment only at close range;
- Distance vision impairment;
- Frequent headaches;
- Extraneous “objects” appear in the eyes, it seems as if something is interfering;
- Fatigue increases;
- With eye pathologies it is painful to look at a bright light;
- There are problems with focusing;
- It becomes difficult to distinguish color shades;
- Sometimes it is difficult to see clear boundaries of forms;
- Omission of the upper eyelid occurs;
- Involuntary movements of the eyeball occur;
- With vision damage, you have to cover your eyes (right or left, depending on the affected side);
- The patient tilts his head to the left or right to view the object;
